This document outlines the procedure for mentoring of a new member to the scheme.
Requirements for new doctor membership to BASICS (Allerdale):
- Minimum - to standard of, preferably possessing, the Pre-hospital Emergency Care Certificate of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
- Desirable- Diploma in Immediate Medical Care of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
- New members should be conversant with the concepts of communication, command & control at the scene of incidents. They should also be competent in radio communication skills.
Mentoring System:
- A specific active member of BASICS (Allerdale), who is already accredited by BASICS, will be assigned to the new member on joining the scheme.
- During the new members first month of operation a system will operate where both they & their mentor are mobilised to incidents together. The new member will be registered as on call with Ambulance control. When paged they will then contact control to obtain details of the incident & its location. They will then contact their mentor in order that they can attend also. During this month all incidents will be discussed after the incident is over.
- Provided the new member performs adequately during this first month they will then be allowed to practice independently. The member must keep an accurate log book of all incidents attended & fill in an incident report form for each event (one copy to accompany patient to hospital, one copy to the scheme administrator & one copy for personal records).
- Once the new member is practising independently they must contact their mentor for assistance if required.
- There will be a regular review of the new member's incident attendance & management with their mentor. This should occur at three months, six months &, if appropriate, at one year from joining the scheme. Once the mentor & new member are happy with performance, this must be a minimum of six months, the Doctor will then be deemed to have passed the probationary mentorship period.
